LHC 3-sigma evidence for Higgs boson of 125GEV

About time!! 3-sigma doesn't prove it, but is a very good indication it is there. The Higgs boson is predicted by the standard model and is responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking and the fundamental particles becoming massive.

Klingon Software Release Process

"What is this talk of 'release'? Klingons do not make software 'releases'. Our software 'escapes' leaving a bloody trail of designers and quality assurance people in its wake." -- Klingon programmer.

Do the Ends Justify the Means? Occupy Oakland Shuts Down Port

When I hear protesters shut down the city of Oakland Port I wonder about the companies and workers this disruption impacted. Sure, it brought attention to the cause and lost revenue to the rich. But I bet it also hurt small business and poor workers who depend on the port directly and indirectly all the way down the line. How many humble enterprises and lives were disrupted for want of a nail because of this protest? I've been thinking a lot about the dismal historical outcomes of mass uprisings where the outcome usually seems to be a different small group at the top and the masses hurt, killed and worse off than before. I hope to write more about possible different ways to approach creating widespread prosperity. The Oakland incident makes me think that truly constructive means are key: not just non-violent means, but means that add real value rather than destroying wealth and the ability of others to create it.

Below are songs that speak to me of the of the dismal historical record of revolution in freeing the masses and the realities of class distinction.

A simple, real-world illustration of Moore's law

A couple of days ago I built a new computer for myself with parts purchased from NewEgg to replace the one I built about six years ago. Both systems cost roughly the same.

Old:

  • 1GB RAM
  • dual core 2GHz AMD processor
  • mirrored 160GB drives

New:

  • 16GB RAM
  • six core 3.3GHz AMD processor
  • mirrored 2TB drives

A rough generalization of Moore's law is a doubling in capacity every two years. Six years gives 2 x 2 x 2 = 8. Comparing the systems above shows at this rough level I am reaping the benefits of Moore's law without an increase in cost: the wonderous benefits of technology!

  • 16 x RAM
  • 12 x disk
  • 5 x CPU

Far away eyes

I almost was smeared across the pavement riding my bike home from work today. I was going pretty fast in the bike lane on Burlington and a lady turned right in front of me into a parking lot. I managed to brake and spill with no harm except a scraped hand and knee. I went up to the lady in her SUV and she had no idea I had been there or spilled. She picked up her iPhone from her lap but swore she had not been on a call. I didn’t stick around to ask if she was doing anything else on her iPhone.

Thank you Jesus, thank you Lord!

Drupal Sweaver Module Rocks

http://drupal.org/project/sweaver

The Sweaver module allows in-browser theming of Drupal sites through a WYSIWYG interface. Click on the element and use the interface to change styles interactively without writting CSS. You see the changes in real time and the module saves the CSS for you. Make sure to check out the configuration options for other capabilities you can turn on. I had some troubles figuring out how to use it and should have watched the videos linked to the module home page. One of the toughest parts is interactively choosing the correct selector for what you want to style. Sweaver shows an interactive selector path to the element you click on that can be used to tweak the exact selector you want. It's really nice, but you have to know your way around selectors and Drupal's selector naming to use it well.
